Say No to Thugs, National Football League! first part

"What in the world is going on outside?" If the Great Man were present today, he would comment on the numerous instances of National Football League players being arrested for various offenses, such as DUI, physical assault, and charges involving weapons. It's very depressing to see that most of the headlines about the National Football League on websites like ESPN.com are about players getting into legal trouble. Sports are meant to be a fun diversion from the grimy news headlines from around the world or the housing market predictions.

Roger Goodell, the bright new NFL Commissioner, is obviously trying to address this issue and spread the word that thug-like behaviour won't be tolerated. Are the players paying attention, though? Clearly, he faces a challenging assignment.

According to several sportswriters, professional sports are really all about winning, so it doesn't matter what kind of citizen you are as long as you are a talented enough player to help your team win. The teams are willing to give the players as many second, third, or fourth chances as they see fit, ข่าวฟุตบอลวันนี้ which is far more than would be permitted for an employee of a business in the "real world." In fact, many businesses completely forbid second chances.

To remind the owners, coaches, and fans that integrity in professional sports should be just as important as success, perhaps Mr. Goodell needs a catchy slogan that could be used in advertisements. What about

DO NOT HURT PEOPLE!

One major city newspaper compared the number of NFL players arrested to the number of people in general and discovered that the numbers were remarkably similar, almost as if the issue had been exaggerated. Since players in the National Football League do not represent the "general population," this argument is at best illogical. The appropriate peer group to contrast them with is:

Millionaire celebrities with lavish lifestyles who only have to work a few months a year.

And even if we count each and every run-in Paris Hilton has had with the law, and give Mel Gibson double penalty points for the foul-mouthed remarks he made to the officer who arrested him in Malibu, football players have had a higher incidence of breaking the law over the past few years.
